Chapter 1: The Phantom Touch

Chapter 1: The Phantom Touch

The scream tore through the cavernous halls of the Reynolds mansion, a sharp, terrifying sound that shattered the evening’s quiet. A split second later came the sickening thud of a heavy impact against the polished mahogany banister.

“Hold on!” Emily Parker’s mind shrieked in silent panic as her footing betrayed her.

Her body pitched forward into empty air. At eight months pregnant, gravity was a cruel enemy; her center of balance was completely compromised. A fall down the grand staircase wouldn’t just mean broken bones—it meant a catastrophic tragedy for her unborn child.

Time slowed to a torturous crawl. Emily’s heart didn’t just race; it stopped entirely.

  • With her left hand, she instinctively cupped her swollen belly, a desperate shield against the incoming concrete.
  • With her right hand, she clawed at the air until her fingers found the wooden railing, gripping it with white-knuckled, life-saving ferocity.

Muscles straining, joints popping under the sudden arrest of her momentum, Emily managed to yank herself back from the abyss. For one agonizing moment, she hung over the edge, staring down at the marble foyer below. Then, slowly, painfully, she collapsed onto the steps, her body trembling violently.

She had not fallen. But she had been so close.

Chapter 2: The Hand That Wasn’t There

Emily remained frozen on the staircase, unable to move.

Her breathing came in short, uneven bursts as one hand stayed wrapped around the railing and the other protected her belly.

She kept replaying the same moment in her mind.

The sudden shift beneath her foot.

The loss of balance.

The terrifying feeling of falling.

But there was one detail she couldn’t explain.

Someone had touched her.

Not pushed.

Not grabbed.

Touched.

A hand had pressed against her back for the briefest second before she lost her balance.

Emily slowly looked up the staircase.

The hallway was empty.

The golden lights flickered softly.

The mansion was silent.

Too silent.

“Emily!”

The voice came from below.

Her husband, Daniel Reynolds, rushed into the foyer, his face filled with panic.

“What happened?”

Emily tried to answer, but her voice came out as a whisper.

“Someone was behind me.”

Daniel stopped.

“What do you mean?”

“I felt a hand.”

The color faded from his face.

“Are you sure?”

Emily looked at him, hurt by the question.

“I almost fell down an entire staircase, Daniel. I know what I felt.”

Within minutes, the mansion staff gathered.

Everyone had a different explanation.

Maybe Emily became dizzy.

Maybe her pregnancy caused her to lose balance.

Maybe stress was affecting her.

Everyone had an answer.

Except Emily.

She knew something was wrong.

Because the staircase had a security camera.

And Daniel knew it.

He immediately called for the footage.

The entire household waited in silence as the recording loaded.

The screen showed Emily walking alone toward the stairs.

She placed one hand on the railing.

She took the first step.

Then the second.

And suddenly…

Her body moved forward.

But no one was there.

No person.

No shadow.

Nothing.

The room became quiet.

Emily stared at the screen.

Her heart sank.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

She pointed at the monitor.

“Someone was there.”

No one answered.

Then the mansion’s old housekeeper, Mrs. Clara Whitmore, stepped forward.

Her hands were shaking.

“There is something you need to know, Mrs. Reynolds.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Clara looked toward the staircase.

“The previous owner of this house…”

She paused.

“She said the same thing.”

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Clara lowered her voice.

“She said she felt someone touch her on those stairs.”

A cold silence filled the room.

Emily looked back at the staircase.

For the first time, she noticed something she had missed before.

A small scratch on the wooden railing.

Fresh.

New.

As if someone had recently grabbed it.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Emily opened it.

And immediately froze.

The message contained only five words:

“You weren’t supposed to survive.”

Her hands began to tremble.

Daniel saw her expression.

“Emily?”

She slowly turned the phone toward him.

The moment he read the message…

His face changed.

Because he recognized the number.

It belonged to someone who was supposed to be gone forever.

To be continued…
