PART 2 — THE VIDEO THEY TRIED TO ERASE

The room fell completely silent as the security footage continued to play.

The timestamp showed only minutes after Emily had been brought into the trauma room.

Doctors and nurses rushed around her bed while monitors flashed across the screen.

Then the recording slowed.

Emily’s fingers curled.

Barely.

But unmistakably.

A nurse pointed at the movement.

Before she could speak, Dr. Adrian Vale stepped directly in front of the camera, blocking the view.

“Time of death,” his voice announced calmly.

The detective paused the video.

“She moved after you declared her deceased.”

Vale swallowed hard.

“Residual muscle activity. It happens.”

“Then explain this.”

Lena tapped the screen.

Another camera angle appeared, one the hospital had automatically backed up to a secure server before someone tried to erase it.

This time there was no obstruction.

Emily’s chest rose.

A shallow breath.

Then another.

The detective zoomed in.

A heart monitor that had been disconnected moments earlier still displayed a weak rhythm before someone reached over and switched the screen off.

Every eye turned toward Vale.

“Who unplugged the monitor?” the detective asked.

Vale remained silent.

One of the surgeons stepped forward slowly.

“That wasn’t part of our protocol.”

Another doctor frowned.

“Neither was ordering immediate release to a funeral home.”

Lena opened another file from the tablet.

“I found this in the audit log.”

She held the screen toward the detectives.

At 3:17 p.m., someone using Dr. Vale’s personal login had deleted the fetal ultrasound report.

At 3:19 p.m., the electronic medical record had been edited.

Two lines had disappeared.

Fetal heartbeat detected.

Maternal neurological response observed.

The detective’s expression hardened.

“You didn’t overlook the signs.”

He looked directly at Vale.

“You removed them.”

Before anyone could react, Vale suddenly lunged for the tablet.

It slipped from Lena’s hands.

The detective caught it before it hit the floor.

Two officers immediately restrained Vale as he struggled to pull away.

“You don’t understand!” he shouted.

“If that file gets out, people far above me are finished!”

The corridor fell silent.

The detective stopped.

“People?” he repeated.

Vale realized what he had just revealed.

His face went pale.

Too late.

At that exact moment, a nurse rushed out of the operating room, breathing hard.

“Detective!”

“You need to see this immediately.”

Everyone hurried inside.

Emily remained unconscious, surrounded by machines.

One of the surgeons stood frozen in front of the ultrasound monitor.

His expression was filled with disbelief.

“This… doesn’t make sense,” he whispered.

The detective stepped closer.

“What is it?”

The surgeon slowly pointed at the screen.

“There are signs…”

“…that Emily wasn’t carrying just one baby.”

Mark felt his knees weaken.

“What are you saying?”

The surgeon looked directly into his eyes.

“The records say one pregnancy.”

“The scan says there should have been two.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Mark stared at the monitor, unable to speak.

“Where’s the second baby?” he whispered.

No one answered.

Then a technician zoomed in on the ultrasound image.

A tiny identification tag appeared in the corner.

Exam performed at 2:41 p.m.

Below it…

A patient ID that wasn’t Emily’s.

The detective’s eyes widened.

“…Someone switched the medical records.”
