part 1: THE CHILD IN THE WATER

Christopher yanked Emma from the water and dropped to one knee with her against his chest until she coughed, cried, and finally drew a full breath. Then he stood and placed her behind him, one arm still shielding her. Juliette’s expression changed so quickly it almost looked like she had become a different woman. Confidence vanished. Calculation rushed in. “Chris, she slipped,” she said. “I reached for her and—” He cut her off without raising his voice. “You tried to hurt my child for a house you will never own.” The staff heard every word. So did Juliette, and her fear sharpened because Christopher’s sentence revealed something crucial. He knew why she had done it.
Emma was not born a Pierce. Her mother, Rachel Monroe, had been Christopher’s partner before his brief first marriage to another woman, a marriage that ended quietly and with enough settlements to keep tabloids interested for a year. Rachel died in a freeway crash when Emma was two, but not before a DNA test privately confirmed Christopher was the girl’s father.
PART 2: THE TRUTH BENEATH THE SURFACE
No one moved.
The only sound was Emma’s uneven breathing as she clung to the back of Christopher’s jacket.
Juliette forced a laugh.
“Chris… you’re overreacting.”
Christopher didn’t answer.
Instead, he slowly turned to the resort’s security manager.
“Lock every exit.”
The man’s expression tightened.
“Mr. Pierce…?”
“You heard me.”
Within seconds, two security guards stepped toward the gates.
Juliette’s smile disappeared.
“Are you serious? You’re treating me like a criminal?”
Christopher looked at her with an expression she’d never seen before.
“I’ve spent months wondering who kept leaking information about my daughter.”
He paused.
“Now I know.”
The color drained from Juliette’s face.
“What are you talking about?”
Christopher reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
A single tap.
A video began playing.
The footage came from a hidden security camera inside his office.
Juliette was standing at his desk.
She wasn’t looking for documents.
She was photographing Emma’s medical records.
Every page.
Every detail.
The staff exchanged stunned glances.
Juliette took a slow step backward.
“You planted a camera?”
“I stopped trusting people a long time ago.”
Another tap.
A second recording appeared.
This time, it showed Juliette meeting a man in a parking garage three nights earlier.
An envelope changed hands.
Then another.
Cash.
Lots of it.
“I hired investigators after someone offered ten million dollars for information about Emma,” Christopher said quietly.
“They found you before you realized they were watching.”
Juliette’s breathing became uneven.
“Chris… I can explain.”
“I’ve already heard enough.”
She suddenly turned and ran.
Security rushed after her.
She barely made it twenty feet before one of the guards blocked her path.
Cornered.
Desperate.
She shouted across the courtyard.
“You don’t understand!”
Christopher didn’t blink.
“Then help me understand.”
Juliette looked around at the crowd gathering near the pool.
“They weren’t supposed to scare her.”
Christopher’s jaw tightened.
“They?”
The single word echoed through the silence.
Juliette realized what she’d just admitted.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
Too late.
Christopher stepped closer.
“There are others.”
She didn’t answer.
Instead, her eyes drifted toward the parking lot.
Toward a black SUV.
Its engine had just started.
Christopher followed her gaze.
“So they came.”
Without another word, he handed Emma to the resort manager.
“Keep her inside. Don’t let anyone leave with her.”
Then he sprinted toward the exit.
The black SUV accelerated.
Its tires screamed against the pavement.
Christopher ran straight into its path.
The driver hesitated for only a second…
…before slamming the accelerator to the floor.
To be continued…
